With Self-Pay, Choice is in Your Hands

With a self-pay private practice, the power of choice is in your hands. You choose the therapist, you choose how many sessions, you choose the length of therapy, and you choose whether you will bill your insurance. Your treatment plan, notes, and diagnosis can remain between you and your therapist.

Michelle C. Brooten-Brooks, M.S., LMFT

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

“Life is not meant to be tolerated and endured.
You are meant to thrive.
I want to help you strive to become your greatest self.”

 My Background
I became a therapist a little later in life, after gaining life experience, through both marriage and motherhood with my three children.

My Experience
After graduating with a Master’s in Marriage & Family Therapy, I worked in community mental health with all ages.

Many of my clients were in active crisis. I had to quickly restore a sense of hope, help them find relief, and guide them toward their healing.

Relationship Therapy
Good relationships don’t just happen, and none of us are born knowing relationship or communication skills. I have learned as a therapist that when a relationship is healed through skills gained in therapy, a family is too.

My Approach & Philosophy
As a journalist with nearly 25 years of experience, the best parts of gathering stories emerge by simply having a conversation.

My Therapy Style

Therapy to me is about helping people make sense of their lives. My style of therapy includes:

  • Therapy with me is conversational, collaborative, responsive, and interactive.
  • You won’t have to guess what I’m thinking because I think out loud.
  • I take minimal notes to be more present.
  • My focus is on what the client wants to get out of therapy and their goals.
  • My therapeutic techniques vary, but I always use a strengths-based and solution-focused approach.
  • I strive to be of service, to be genuine, concerned with the best interest of my clients, and to be worthy of my clients’ trust.

“At least you care…”
One day, a client said to me, “Miss Michelle, what I like about you is that you’ll be honest with me and you’ll tell me the truth. Sometimes even if the truth is what we need to hear, it can be hard to hear –  at least I know you care.”
